I work 10 hour days and have a 13 year old daughter that plays on two soccer teams so weekdays its hard to get any shop time, but I managed a little and got some binding bent last night, and got it glued on the top tonight.

Well were all bound up I have so much to learn about building and seems like most of its coming the hard way. Any way this is a big step down the road from #1 but I still have a ways to go. And now to lay out and start a 13 fret neck.

Almost a guarantee there will be another 13 fret Nick Lucas, roughed out two neck blanks, time to do some carving.

Tony, thanks for looking. The seam........ I almost nailed that one
On the original the seam is black, that sunburst thing, however I'm thinking I want the finish translucent to show off the grain so I'm thinking about which way to go.

Although I have always loved the Les Paul, red to yellow sunburst, I was never a fan of sunburst finishes on acoustic guitars until I started building them. Now I like a subtle burst, not a full, blacked out sides kind of 'burst like your pic. I like seeing the wood, so I know what you mean. You could use some of the binding material to make a wedge back there.

Nice progress - I like the choice of woods. I'm also one of those who likes to see the grain through the color.

FYI I did a butt joint on a size 0 and it didn't close quite to my satisfaction. I just routed a 1/16" slot and put in a piece of black purfling (bindings were black). Came out just fine. Would be a little harder with the binding on. Guess it depends how dark you plan to do the finish.

Easy as. I actually forgot to do the heel strip of my last one...

By the time I realised it, the binding was on, and I coulda kicked myself in the butt. I used a scalpel, and small chisel to clean out a trench and inset the strip...

Yeah, because if it's the full, blacked out look, you'll have to punch it in the face!

Are you worried about the voids in the face of the neck blank? I see one adjacent to the nut slot area and one near the truss rod slot.

Beth I'm pretty sure thats some mild spalting, Anyway its almost as hard as my head so we should be ok

I, too, like the dovetail, and don't intend to stop using it.

I don't subscribe to Martin's nonsense about the joint, it just seems more organic and "right" to me....

Slotted some Amazonian rosewood I got from my dad. Laid out my taper scribed the lines, minus the binding, freehand cut proud of the line on my tablesaw and used a shooting board and a very sharp plane to the line. Glued on the binding with HHG then the sharp plane and a shooting board to my final taper. Started sanding a 16 inch radius.

Nice fingerboard! Are you going to make the bridge from the amazon as well? I like the color of it.

Yep, Howard Merle, one of my dads neighbors/woodworking buddies in Bon Aqua Tennessee, son is an airline pilot that lives in Miami Florida, this wood was part of a packing crate that came through the airport some years ago. One of the boards was brazilian......
