If Lance can have sports threads, why not car stuff? Personally, I'm into vintage motorsports (antique drags, dirt sprintcars, and classic roadracing), some modern drags (think NHRA), and BONNEVILLE! I'm also in the Studebaker Driver's Club and on my 3rd Studebaker - a 1966 Wagonaire with the sliding rear roof. My dad raced gokarts when I was a little kid, and then dragraced bikes when I was in highschool. Many of my friends and family are rodders or racers of some kind. My first guitar repair tools were scale modeling tools from my years building a ton of plastic car and plane kits. I learned to paint with a rattle can, and I was good. I'm a car guy as much as I'm a luthier. So sing out, folks - let's hear it. |

I was a car nut right along with being a guitar nut. I can't even guess the number of testers model cement I went through! As I got older I started working at an auto body shop at 15 during spring break. I worked at, managed and eventually owned that very shop until closing the business and selling the property in March of 2007. It was my only job other than my new biz that I am in my sixth year of. During the course of those years I restored many cars of my own and hobby raced a Chevelle that I built in the mid 80's. My favorite car is still the first I ever owned, 1966 Chevy II sport couple. It was mist blue, had a 283 with powerglide and was just the fastest little thing for a "stock" shoe box Chevy. I drove it through high school and once I graduated I restored it again for car shows. I sold the car a couple years later to get money for down payment on my first home at 20 years old. I had a chance to buy the car back a year later and regret not buying it to this day. Similar Novas go for $13,000 to $20,000 now. I just spotted one in Texas for $23,000 and I would love to snatch it up! I really don't pay much attention to car stuff these days but it doesn't take much to catch my eye if it is a vintage Chevy that isn't overly modified. |

Chris, I expect you spend at least a little bit of time on the HAMB. Am I right? I started out with my first model car at age 4, a '53 Studebaker. I didn't like the paint color I'd put on it and before it dried, I tried to remove it with Kleenex. All I remember of of the result was that it was a furry mess. I kept on with models and in my teens devoured car magazines. A slot car track was next, which fille up most all of my parents' garage. We lived within driving distance of Fremont Drag Strip in the 60s, and it was near the grandparents' house, so visits there were frequent for a while. My first real car was a 55 T-Bird, which I stuffed a 390 CI motor into, mostly because everybody told me it wouldn't fit. It came out better than anyone, mostly myself, expected. That car turned the local street racing scene (well, country-road drag racing scene) on its ear. With its light weight and good weight distribution, it seldom lost to GTOs and Corvettes of that era. But I had to sell it to pay off traffic tickets. Its replacement was a VW, which left me with the pains of withdrawal, the cure for which was the first of a string of 3-liter Austin Healys. After that, I slipped into auto oblivion from which I have yet to recover. I'd love to have any of those cars again, exc the VW. Pat |

My dad and I are working on this '53 Studebaker Starliner. It will get a Fatman's clip, 327 chev, Halibrands, etc. I have had a weakness for '67-'72 Chevy trucks for quite some time. |

Mercy, Pat! Two beauties in one shot. (The Stude is a late '53, I expect the other is a little older) |

Hey Chris, I'll share. 1st was a 1959 Rambler 2 door Station Wagon. Reverse was down below Low and it had a 60 40 front seat. If you idled across the tracks not only would it fall into reveres the pasanger side of the front seat would fall all the way back. Next was a 1961 Falcon 2 door, 6 cylinder with a split exhaust, 3 on the tree moved to the floor. Moved on to a 1961 Impala 2 door. With electric windows I some how kept them working. Followed by a 1967 Camaro SS with RS package. It was built towards the last half of the production year so it had a 350 instead of a 327. Sold it when I was drafted. Next cool car was a 1987 Camaro IROC It was fun but at 50,000 miles the body rattled so much it drove you nuts. Then a 1977 Trans Am. I rebuilt it but could never find T Tops for it so I sold it before it was done. Been a few Bikes through the years H.D’s and Yamaha’s At one time I thought I would always own a bike and all my cars would be 2 doors. Hell now even my truck is a 4 door! and I don't have a Bike Wish I would have kept all of these |

Sweet rides! My brother handed me this photo of my old T-Bird from further up the thread, packing a 390, a few months ago. I'd never seen the photo. Attachment: Screen-Shot2-2014-02-25-at-12.18.07-PM.jpg Pat |
