i messed around once as a teenager with an electric guitar project, and i got it almost completed but abandoned it. so just a few years ago i got back into it again, and made a neck. i used 3 maple strips i bought at a home improvement store(Menards). it has no truss rod. the fingerboard is a "factory reject" from Hamer from back in the '80s(connections...). it was slotted, but not radiused, and it had block inlays made of what looked like pink clay. after radiusing, i was pleased to uncover clay dot inlays underneath...
anyway, i messed around and carved the headstock kinda goofy with gouges. it is rough, and the back is rough(by rough i mean tooling marks, scars, etc), but it plays really well, sounds(seems like no trussrod makes for more sustain)great, and feels great. it is about the same shape and thickness as my '87 strat...
pictured is a "frame" body i rigged together to audition the neck. it is currently not in service, but i plan to change that soon! i like this neck.
also it was my first attempt at fretting, and making a bone nut from scratch. everything turned out well.
oh, and i had the wise idea to "flame blacken" the carvings with a blowtorch, on the headstock, which started to separate the glue laminate seams.....NOT a good idea, kiddies; heat=bad for glue joints.
