Hello,

Has anyone here built an 8 string baritone? In researching I see scale lengths from 19" to 21.25" for baritone. There will be two wound strings so would it need to be the longer scale length? Kala measurements for their now discontinued 8 string show:

Scale Length: 20.25 inches, Overall Instrument Length: 31.5 inches, Body Length: 14 inches, Number of frets: 19, Width at upper bout: 7.75 inches, Width at lower bout: 10.25 inches, Width at waist: 6.625 inches, Body Depth: 3.288 inches, Fingerboard width at nut: 1.497 inches, Fingerboard width at neck/body joint: 1.87 inches

If you have built one I'd love to hear how it turned out.

Brad

This is a 20" scale. D and G are octave pairs. B and E are unison pairs.

Thanks, David.

It looks like the saddle on this one is straight. Is that correct? Any issues with intonating the wound DG?

Yes, the saddle is straight across, as this has proven over time to work out well on my baritones. I don't recall any problems with intonation and the owner, who is a very experienced musician, has said that he is happy with it. The low D string is a TI CF35 and the low G is a TI CF30. The fluorocarbons are .025, .0235, .029 and .022. These were all from a supplier who is no longer with us. Following is part of an email that I sent to the owner. I don't know if the Oasis sizes are current but those sizes ought to be a reasonable starting place:

I saved some notes on the strings since it is a little unusual:

Strings on the instrument as shipped:

D3 - TI CF35
D4 - .025

G3 - TI CF30
G4 - .023

B3 x 2 - .029

E4 x 2 - .022

The fluorocarbons can be taken from these two sets:

Oasis 8000 fluorocarbon uke set:
.215
.023
.027
.030

Oasis 8100 fluorocarbon uke set:
.023
.025
.027
.030
