I may be soon having some bird's eye maple, zirocote, and bocote resawn for my future use for ukuleles. Thickness sanding will be virtually free if done ant the same time. For myself, I would just have it all sanded to 1/16, but in case I eventually give or sell some of it to someone else, what is the minimum thickness I should sand the unjoined sets? |

That's too thin for me, and I build my ukuleles light. My tops, backs and sides end up around 1.8mm most of the time, and 1/16 is 1.5mm. Plus when I join tops and backs I'd like some room for user error (!), and I'll definitely want to scrape down the glue line both sides to make it invisible, which even with perfect joining would leave me at maybe 1.2 mm. Thickness sanded to 2.1mm, or 3/32, would work nicely for me. I like to work down the last fractions of thickness to get a feel for how thin the wood wants to be to work properly as an instrument. |
