Post subject:  Octave Mandolin plan

Hi folks, I am looking for comprehensive octave mandolin plans...bracing, fret placement, neck scale, etc.
There are a few out there and I hope to find out which one has the most info (without buying all of them).
Thanks for any and all information. Play on!!

Hi Nathan,

I bought the Don Kawalek plans, and am building one now. I'm modifying the bracing somewhat, radiusing the top and back etc, but the plans themselves were pretty clear and thorough, with measurements, blown-up detail and so forth. I don't think it would be a problem to build one from scratch for anyone. Good luck!

Same here. Just finished mine and it all worked out pretty well. There are a few confusing parts of his instructions, but nothing that can't be worked out. I also added a radiused top and back. As soon as I get some decent photos, I'll post them on my Octave Mandolin Top Thickness thread http://www.luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10128&t=48906. But here's a taste.

An FYI for you folks. We at Alaska Specialty Woods, Inc. Produce and have in stock Mandola and Octave fronts from our Salvage sourced Old Growth Sitkla Spruce [Mostly high grade]. We have been supplying Weber Mandolins with these for quite a few years. They are not listed in our current online store, but will be in our new web page/online store that should be launched very soon. If anyone needs some now, email us.
