That hump-back looks like it is bent with heat. You could do that with a male-mold and a heat blanket but it would be tricky.
What does the bracing in the back look like?

My name is Nelson Carballo luthier and I´m from in the Canary Islands. Today I present a typical instrument of our islands, is called Timple and has some similarities with the ukulele. It has 5 strings and tuning of DAECG first to fifth. There are several scales but the most common in recent years ranging from 390mm 12 frets to 420 17/18 frets. the peculiarity of this instrument is its hump-shaped. This is probably the forerunner of the ukulele. One of the first, possibly "the first", builders of ukuleles was Manual Nunas who arrived from the Canary Islands on the Ravenscroft in 1885 (I'm guessing) to work in the sugar plantations. He was a furniture maker and found a market for musical instruments. Either he or his son moved to California to build ukulele after 1900. These are not uncommon in Brazil. Bob

Unkabob; I was thinking that the Ukelele was from Portugal. So I googled it again. Found out it actually is from macronesia(sic) sorry about the spelling. I thought they were a Portuguese instrument. Has an uncertain origin, The timple as other stringed instruments, definitely has Arab ancestors. But it has also influenced some South American instruments, especially the charango. The tuning MI, LA, MI, DO, SOL traditional charango is virtually coincident with the timple (although in the timple, the first string is RE). Another marked difference could be implementing the use of double rope, as the charango used 5 pairs (10 strings in total). Some experts believe that this ancient instruments change when he went the strings of animal fiber cords of nylon or metal. Surely some South American builder came to use abseil to enhance your sound. Possibly this change occurred in Peru or Bolivia, as the oldest charangos were found in these nations |

The idea of carving the whole instrument out of one piece reminds me of the canoes chopped out of one tree by various tribes around the world. I'll have to try one someday.
