Personaly I use the Grover A Style and have had no issues thus far . Its about as cheap as I like to go . For the challenge I have a set of the economy version and will change them out later down the road .

They have a large choice of various configurations, including Ebony or Rosewood knobs. The web page is only a small sample of the possibilities. Best to contact them and get a catalogue.

I don't think there are any that compare the "Sta-tites", in terms of bang for the $. I've used the regular A-style tuners from Grover, Schaller, Gotoh and the new "Golden Age" ones from Stewmac, and the quality seems about the same. The "Economy" Grovers from LMI work OK, but they feel very cheap and heavy, with those metal buttons. I think it mostly comes down to the look you prefer. Also make sure you consider the options regarding the worm gear's position relative to the cog when you design your headstock, they are not necessarily interchangeable (worm below=old style). Mandolins tend to be neck heavy, so it makes sense to use light weight tuners, and many makers swap out the stock bushings with those thin walled ones sold by Stewmac to save weight. The stew mac "economy" tuners are as advertised. I have them on my mandolin and as a player I honestly dont care. They work fine. Not quality by any means. For a step up, the grovers, which are like 70$ or so I think, are great. I love those tuners.
