Post subject: | Ukulele String Gauges |
I just finished building 5 Tenor ukes and would like to string them using a low G (4th string). I have 10 sets of regular G tuning strings gauged from the first, A .028 nylon, E .036 nylon, C .036 wound, G .032 nylon. I need to change the 4th nylon string to a low G wound string. I just can't seem to find out what gauge would be a proper replacement. I can buy sets with a low G but I already have 10 purchased. Anyone out there help?? Michael |

Michael: I mic'd the low G on a set of Aquila tenors at 0.030-0.031"dia. You could try Dr Cluck on Ebay. Bob |

Thanks Bob, what you measured is the #4 string for the regular G tuning. I need a gauge to make that string an octave lower. I might try a #4 guitar string and see what happens. Michael |

Hmm....Sounds like you should just make 10 more Hi-G tenors now. I found one low G gauge listed.....Worth strings at Elderly list a wound low G string = 0.0358" or 0.91mm Maybe you should post on the Ukulele Underground forums and ask if other brands vary much |

Thanks guys. If I use a low G I have to have a compensated saddle. Improvising is challaging with a high G 4th string so low G it has to be. Today I tried a D #4 nylon string on a tenor I have in my store and it sounded pretty good. Here is a quick pic of the 5 tenors before finish... Michael |
