I never do solid colors, but my niece has asked for a gloss black electric guitar. Can anyone recommend a rattle can for applying a solid black base coat. I will likely add a Mohawk clear lacquer top coat (although I’m always open to suggestions for getting a good solid black high gloss finish).

Why rattle can? I’m just assuming it is the cheapest way to get a one-guitar solution. Educate me, please, if I’m wrong. Perhaps lacquer is wrong, and I should go with some automotive finish? One of those spray cans where you slam the bottom to release a catalyst?

In any case, twenty years of trying to apply the thinnest finish possible and make the wood’s beauty shine through hasn’t prepared me for this request.

If you are experienced with gloss nitro stick with nitro. Stewmac has black nitro rattlecans and Mohawk do too. If you’ve got a spray gun, just add a little black pigment to whatever lacquer you normally spray. Lampblack is pretty cheap.

I buy Tamiya acrylic lacquer in the rattle can at Hobbytown, USA.

Second the StewMac black rattle can, nice stuff. I've found the last 1/3 of the cans spit though at least mine did. Disrespectful things can't take them anywhere but I digress. So maybe buy enough with the idea that you will want to toss the last 1/3 of each can instead of be upset with what happens next.... ;) I would stop at the last 1/3 and then use that for jigs and stuff that did not matter, much.

Stewmac rattle can worked well for me.
If you spray through a gun, Mixol pigment can be added. Local Woodcraft sells Mixol.
I used black dye on bare wood, sprayed black Mixol in lacquer, then clear coat.
Don’t fret when polishing. It’s impossible to remove swirl marks.

Will Mixol make it opaque? I have Trans Tints, but I didn’t think I would get an opaque base coat with dyes.

Mixol will get you an opaque result if you use enough of it.

Mixol is not really a dye like Transtint, but more of a stain or colorant.

It's not a guitar - but it's painted with Tamiya gloss black lacquer from a rattle can...

That is very nice. Is there clear gloss on top, or the straight black?
