Hi all,
I just purchased my 2nd kit and as I'm waiting for it to arrive I'm trying to get everything set and in place to get to work on it.

I haven't dealt with basswood yet and I was wondering if anyone could help me with what the best way to apply a deep, dark red to the basswood body. Would paint, stain, or varnish be best; also, is there any special treatments that I should be mindful about?

Thanks!

Basswood is pretty tight grain. It will take some stain, but for deep red I suggest a transparent red finish, and lots of it.

Oh nice, I never even thought of that.
Thanks for the tip!

My humble advice is always to get a hunk of the same wood (a cutoff is ideal) and practice on it before you commit to your guitar.

Basswood does have a potential problem in that it is pretty easily dented. I know that when Ibanez was using it for guitar bodies they put some sort of epoxy finish on it - you might be happy with a two part catalyzed finish.

That's great, thanks. My kit is actually of an Ibanez as well, so that's very helpful
