I am building a Claypool inspired bass and need suggestions on how I should attach the headstock. https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipNuNy8agZwXtVTprTQiMy9lrRyuPEILNJIIg4uq https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipOuOWFMU0lqkLSTgmmZpnyDnSoS1TXCdSnp_1WE I have a solid oak neck through bass but for some reason didn't think about how to attack a headstock before I glued it all together. In the past I have attacked the headstocks with a scarf joint or a piece of reinforced inlay. Looking for new ideas though maybe someone else has tried making necks in this method. Obviously its alot easier and stronger to make the necks solid one piece but I have been taking scraps and off-cuts of hardwoods for free and turning them into instruments. Appreciate any feedback. |

First of all - your links don't work. Second, oak is not usually a good choice for an electric instrument. And third (you already know this), plan your job before starting and trying to fix the problem later. |

Oak moves a lot! would be a last choice for me for a neck as well but that's me. Attaching the headstock? well scarf is the tried and true method. Don't think I'd reinvent the wheel at this point, especially since the body is already attached.... |

Just trying to turn nothing into something. I cannot afford the price of hardwoods where I live so I get off-cuts from local cabinet shops of low-grade/cheap hardwoods with alot of knots. Trying to come up with a seamless way of making a headstock attach to the neck in 2 pieces without seeing the difference in grain like a scarf joint. If ya can't make it then fake it lmao. |

Any pin knots etc in your neck will mean a very unstable neck that will most likely twist..... So maybe you may want to save your time and find something else to work with. Maple is available all over the USA fairly cheap and makes fine necks. |
