Post subject: | accoustic bass build |
I just became played the taylor Mini e bass built on a 3/4 size body with a 23 1/2" scale, It uses the D'Addario exppbb190GS coated phosphor bronze string. I want to build one & I may only have time to build the body at this moment in time. So here are some of the questions that have occurred to me so far. If I understand the string specs for tension they only produce 51 lbs. -so what do I need for top thickness & bracing -bridge plate & bridge -I would like to out it on a 000 body -and they have created some kind of a dual prong bridge pin design? -what kind of tuners - neck reinforcement -bass frets I suppose any additional thoughts appreciated Mike McNerney |

My thoughts on top bracing for this; It may be easy to under build this.... While the tension is low so are the frequencies and I think that a top structure to "loose" will be floppy and give bad bass response in the registers needed. I would keep my top the same thickness as for a steel string maybe even just a tad thicker and experiment by thinning out the edges on a completed instrument in the white to get balance of bass and treble tone. Do this unbound and you can measure the plate thickness at the edge. The bracing is the tricky part......I think I would open up my X brace angle and make it a bit shorter top to bottom to give more rather than try and make overly light braces. |
