Post subject:  Installing Posts/Studs for JS100

I'm replacing the stock tremolo in my Ibanez Js100 with a Gotoh Floyd rose, however the posts for the Gotoh are slightly larger. I was going to use the existing posts, but then decided I should probably try to install the Gotoh posts, as the old posts are slightly worn. I'm going to have to drill the holes slightly larger to accommodate the Gotoh posts. Is there anything I should be aware of before embarking on this potentially disastrous repair? My plan is to drill with a slightly larger metric drill bit, then hammer in the new posts and hope for the best. Getting pretty excited to upgrade my JS100! Thanks for your help, amigos!

I've done this a lot recently.... Get the proper size metric drill bit, go slowly keeping it absolutely perpendicular, and push them in with your thumb. Tapping with a wooden block is acceptable if they are a little tight. If you hammer them you deserve everything bad that will befall you.

Are you drilling the holes with a drill press?

Thanks for the tips, Pile!

Barry, I was going to use a handheld drill and try my best to stay perpendicular, but now that you mention it, a press would really be the tool for the job. Might be time to call up some carpenter friends and see what I have access to.

The JS model is pretty curvy, so keep it stable....

Altho the quill of a drill press isn't really designed for it I have used them to press studs (and tuner bushings). Chuck a piece of dowel in it, support the body the same way you did when you drilled the holes.

Also if you are worried about centering the holes, plug the old ones with a piece of dowel and mark the centers, then drill with the correct brad point bit.

Everyone is giving you good advice, especially drilling with the right size bit, I just had to do a repair on a home Gotoh Floyd install the the owner was pressing in the new bushings with a vice  You might want to do a test fit on some scrap.
