Hey David - As a Strat owner myself though the years my suggestion is to also give some consideration to some of the higher-end, quality gig bags out there. One of the beautiful things about a Strat is it's compactness so it never made sense to me to stick it in a huge, bulky case.

Many of today's gig bags are very well thought out and provide great protection AND because of less bulk one could make the case that it's harder to hit the things and damage the instrument inside.

Also - bump ;)

SKBs are pretty stout, though there are some fit issues, which could be fixed with a little "custom" work.

When I bought my Strat a few years ago I just had the music store bring in a Fender Tweed case and swapped them for the blown plastic one new Strats are coming in. I don't think they are too expensive but I don't know for sure. I had a good relationship with the store so they just traded me for the plastic one. Even the Tweed case though is made overseas.
