I am in the process of rewiring an old LP style Guild and replacing most everything. The new pups are duncan can 4 wire humbuckers. I have used coax cable for all my long runs and dutifully assured that all the shielding goes to ground. The pup cable has the 4 insulated leads plus a bare ground. It is also has a thin foil wrapping under the outside covering which I assumed to be shielding but from what I can tell it is nonconductive. Infinite resistance between it and the bare ground that is touching it. Can anyone help to explain what this is? If it is shielding how does it work if not grounded? Lastly, if its not shielding then should this cable have external shielding like all the rest - its kind of a long wire. Thanks.

It is metallic shielding coated with a polymer on the outside to strengthen it. You need to touch the multi meter probe to the inside to test it and get a reading!
