I have a half dozen students to build lap steels with soon. Just curious what builders here have to say about the benefits, or otherwise, of grounding the strings on a simple single coil system. Thanks, Bob

Well...
Benefit #1 - You won't die from being shocked.
Benefit #2 - No more 60 cycle hum.

What Chris said.
Hey, I'd love to see what you are up to there!
I build laps only, electric and Weiss styles.

Thanks for the replies. I've always grounded the strings before, but I've seen some mentions of not doing it. Just thought I'd check around. Alan, I've built 7 acoustic Wessenbornagains , and a few lap steels. This project is with 6-string lap steels is challenging. I have to make up kits that allow students to have some say in the building in 10 hours class time. And, I have to do the project on another island, with no shop and only the tools I can carry on the plane. Should be interesting!

With strings ungrounded you often get quiet but annoying popping noises when you go from not touching to touching the strings.
