Hey folks, I'm a new builder who's looking at some finishing options. For the most part I'd like to build strats, teles, and Les Pauls. I'd like to use Nitro and it seems kind of hard to get up here in Canada. I'm able to buy this product,http://www.mohawk-finishing.com/catalog_browse.asp?ictNbr=223 . I've done some research and a lot of builders use it but I'm not sure if they use it for acoustics or for electrics. I want to be able to do nice fiesta reds and butterscotch blonds. Is this something I can do with the Mohawk Lacquer? Is there a tutorial out there for adding pigment to Lacquer.

Yes you should be able to create any color finish you like with that. The lacquer used on electrics is the same as that used on acoustics.

As for adding pigments. First make sure your pigments are compatible with solvent finishes like lacquer. A lot of lacquer finishes use dyes instead of pigment. Dyes create a tinted finish which are transparent so you can see the wood grain through the color. Pigment creates an opaque finish where you only see color and little to no wood grain.

I would recommend Guitar Finishing Step by Step (sold by Stew Mac and based on their products but good general information). I have used Stew Mac dyes with both nitro and water born lacquer (in my case KTM-9 but your product should work) on both acoustic and electrics. I'm just a beginning finisher but here are an example of a Gibson style cherry red (nitro)
