| Post subject: | Patchy finish when applying stain? |
Hi, Ive been given a kit built guitar to stain and finish in nitro. Ive applied the stain after prepping etc and this is what I happened. Its been put together with PVA because I can see it oozing out from under the purflings. Is this the result of not cleaning up after and if so,how do I sort it? Any suggestions would be helpful? You have a lot of sanding to do. Sand and re-apply stain. |

Now you will need to deal with either sanding all the dye off to white wood or blending the dye after you sand out the glue in spots. In the future you can check for glue residue by wiping with spirits and looking at it under a strong light. |

Cant sand it too much as its not solid wood! |

Terry, I can't account for it showing no traces of glue previously, but it's showing traces now. These guys are not kidding you. Every detail shot you've shown looks to me like glue residue holding out the stain--and all the instances are in the usual problem areas, too. It's the first thing I suspected in your shot of the sides under the bindings. It's the first thing I suspected in the unstained streak on the back of the peg head. It's the first thing I suspected where the sides meet the neck. |

Oh well,its out with the sandpaper again,Just have to be careful I done break through the veneer? Thanks guys. |

Then you still need to learn what to look for and how to look for it. A good brite work light on a movable arm is a must for inspection during prep. You need to look at the wetted surface with a raking light across it. The glue will flash in the light. It is not always easy to see but it can be seen. |

I wont be taking any more ready made guitars to spray again. Its easier to just clean up as you work? Ive never had this problem before. |

After 12 guitars, i'm getting better, but still miss a few spots. |
