Post subject: | PAF pickup question |
I installed a Seymor Duncan 59 Sh-1 N pickup in the neck position of a LP build. While the pickup has a great sound, it sounds nothing like my 69 LP. It has a bell like sound similar to a humbucker with one coil shorted. I wonder if I should have bought 490R pickup. Do the Gibson PAF's really sound totally different than pickups used on 69's? Thanks for any input. Also, I installed a Lace Deathbucker in the bridge. It sounds OK, but seems to be lacking treble. I used a recommended 250K pot, but I may try a 500K pot. I have not played it much, so I may just need to get my sound dialed in. Dan |

Hey Dan, Have you checked your 69 to see if it has a shorted coil? Put a coil tap on the Duncan and see if you like it. The Deathbucker is a high output pick up, your going to lose some clarity. Even though the company tells you your gonna get "crisp highs", they mean compared to other heavy metal type pickups. Try something a bit less aggressive. I'm a fan of the Bill Lawrence L-500xl. I know Steve knows and it was just an oversight but for those that may not; there is a big difference between "coil tap" and "coil-splitter". Kind of tricky too with all those pup manufacturers using different color coding on their 4 wire HB's. Something to check and confirm. |

Could you have the coils out of phase? That will produce a sound similar to what you state. I have installed that pickup for numerous cusatomers and find them to sound a lot like the gibson PAF. |

Well, the duncan only has two leads. I measured resistance of 7.5k which is correct, so I know one coil is not shorted to ground. I gotta say, though, that the more I play it, the more I like it. I may get the matching bridge pickup to replace the deathbucker. Thanks fellers, Dan |

I put the matching pickup in the bridge location. Man, these pickups sound incredible, unlike any I've used before. Better than the 490 Gibson pickups. Dan |
