when i rough cut my neck,should i leave the neck thicker or cut it close to the actual dimension prior to installing the fret's. |

I fret finished necks. Others fret fingerboards before gluing. It's really up to you. |

Same as Mattia - I get the finger board to the exact dimensions (width+ length with fret slots cut) then clamp it in rough position and also do a dry string up with dummy nut and bridge in position. This way you can check the strings run nice and parallel to the finger board edge. With it clamped in the right position, drill a couple of 1mm holes through the fretboard in two of the fret slots at either end - then use a couple of panel pins just deep enough to maintain a register - then when you glue up the fretboard will be in the exact same position .... then when dry, carve the neck I tend to then rout of the excess either side of the fretboard first using the fingerboard edge as a guide. |
