I am getting ready for a new build that will have a set neck and have a couple of questions for those of you that have done this before. I have made a few Les Paul style guitars, but I am interested in doing a set neck without a Gibson style tenon. I have seen many guitars made where the tenon is the width of the fingerboard. First off, does the tenon follow the taper of the fingerboard on these styles? It looks like it does but I can’t exactly tell. If this is the case, what are the various methods for cutting the taper in the neck blank from the nut to the end of the tenon accurately? I guess possibly a router, but I don’t like exposing that tall of a bit. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Scott

I use a template and router (mounted to my router table) with a guide bearing and make a straight tenon. If the tenon is not straight, the neck can only be inserted from the top surface of the body. It makes it easier to fine tune the joint if the neck can be slid in from the side of the body. That's how I prefer to do it.
