Very weird....I'm building my first electric guitar, but I've been working with wood for a long time. I'm putting a 1/4 sapele face on the back and for some reason I'm having trouble gluing the book-matched pieces together. I've always used Titebond, but for some reason the joint won't hold and I can actually just pull the two pieces apart after letting it dry for about 24 hours. Has anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions? Thanks! |

How old is your Titebond? |

That is a good question. Probably less than 8 months old. It's Titebond II and it's been working fine on maple. |

Sapele is usually not a problem to glue.....try cleaning your freshly joined edges with some DA prior to glue up. Perhaps this piece has a high resin content, that should take care of that. |

Silly question, Brian: What is DA? I'll be needing some for gluing Teak soon, I'm sure, if it helps with high resin/oil content. Cheers, Nick |

Denatured Alcohol. Thanks, Brian that is a good idea. I will try that and re-post. |

I knew it was a silly question. What's 2+2 again? |

No silly questions! Just don't drink the DA! |

Third attempt on this glue up. Re-jointed, wiped down with DA, and tight clamps. Just a little bit better but still able to bend the joint. I think it's time to give up on this billet! I'm pissed that I already planned to add the thickness on the back and planed down my mahogany body. Now I need to find a maple cap for the back. |

Next time only try to use Titebond I, with the red label. The other one should have held, but you probably didn't have a clean joint and not enough surface to glue. I know titebond II is not recommended by all the luthiers I have ever seen talk about it. |

I agree, titebond 1 is preferred for this game. But I have glued more Sapele than I can remember with the type 2 without any problems. |

Thank you JEguitars and everyone else. I re-jointed AGAIN and used Titebond Original and it worked. Thank you for the help everybody! |
