I just finished my third guitar: a 4-string electric tenor, with a 22.75-inch scale length, tuned CGDA. It's got a mahogany body and a glued-in maple neck with a rosewood fretboard. The body and neck are finished in Tru-Oil. I put in a Seymour Duncan Hot Stack pickup, and it sounds great. I must say I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!

It would be great to hear feedback -- anybody else building electric tenors out there?

Very cool, very elegant. I like it.
Gives me more impetus to build a solidbody mandocello.... after I finish all the other stuff.

Clean, simple lines but quite elegant.
I dig the body and head shapes, and I like the fretboard extension.
The tru-oil enhances without distracting like a shiny lacquer finish would.

DZ: Thanks. The fretboard extension came about because I couldn't find a truss rod that was well-sized for a 22.75-inch scale length. About 16 inches would have been ideal. Instead I used an 18.5-inch Hot Rod, which meant that I had to make the whole neck piece longer. But that in turn gave me plenty of surface area to glue in the neck. So it all worked out. One of the things that I like about making guitars is figuring out trade-offs like that.

Pretty cool! Makes me also want to follow though on an electric mondolin. If I did that I'd probably go with six strings though.

Maybe also an electric banjo I've been thinking about.

I imagine the Tru-Oil finish was about as easy as it gets. How'd that go?

I read Emerson on the can. A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds...true...but a consistent reading of Emerson has its uses nevertheless.

Actually the Tru-Oil finish took a pretty long time, but that was probably due to poor technique on my part. I was hoping to get the kind of mirror finishes that I have seen some people post pictures of here. So I did a lot of thin coats, followed by trying to flat things out with 0000 steel wool and/or 1000 grit sandpaper, over and over again. I think I just wound up removing most of what I had put on, and never did manage to get a really flawless finish. But I'm still happy how it came out.
