Post subject:  Latest build in progress - Neck Thru Flying V

Been a busy boy, especially since it's been raining constantly down here in the south. Got my Flying V close to the finish line.
It's quite similar in construction to the bass I built recently. I installed the hardware so I could string it up and see if it was good to go before I start applying tung oil finish ( Yes, Ace Hardware not true tung oil I know).

I almost had a heart attack as I was stringing it up. I was plucking the high E and fretting it, and it seemed I was off a fret at the octave, 13 instead of 12! OH CRAP! Panicking I grabbed my fret scale ruler, (thinking I'm gonna have to redo this fretboard), Yep it's right, measured the bridge to the nut, yep. Slap my forehead, the nut was moving. Hadn't glued it down yet. Whew! Clamped it in place. There that's better.

Specs:
Wood came from The Wood Yard in Griffin Georgia. Great wood and good prices.
Body: Figured Maple top with Mahogany body
Neck: 7 piece neck thru, Maple w/ slight flame and Purpleheart laminates.
Rosewood Fretboard w/ Purpleheart dot inlays. (Used a plug cutter)
Graph Tec Gibson Nut
Tuners, bridge, and Gold Hardware from Guitarfetish.com and Guitarnuts.net.
Humbucker Pickups from Guitarfetish
Alpha 500K Pots and Switch from StewMac

Looks great Jim and really like the fret dots.

Look forward to seeing it completed and curious about the weight.

Started the oil finish last night. Hanging in my shed (I'm at work) and I'll try to get some pix tonight. Looking sick! At least I'm working a seven / 12 stretch so I can apply every night and let it dry. Otherwise I'd be tempted to put it together too soon. I think it wants to rock!

That is gorgeous Jim! It may be the nicest V I've seen. I can't wait to see the finished results.

You are right about the The Wood Yard. I live 25 minutes away - they are the only decent hardwood dealer I know south of Atlanta. Really nice couple of guys and the wood and prices are great. A few months ago I was going through a pile of wood and found some figured Cuban mahogany. It's worth going there to dig around.

Thanks John. Applying the finish, a coat every night. Working 7 - 12's in a row so keeps me from messing with it too much, LOL.
This flame is popping like crazy. I love an oil finish.

Great looking build there.

Out of interest what oil are you using and did you stain it first at all? I'm just st the finishing stage on mine and can't decide between oil, French polish and celulose laquer.

Ace tung oil finish. Which is a varnish based oil. No stain at all. Applying a coat every night after work.

Didn't like how rough the Ace Hardware tung oil finish was going on. No matter how carefully I applied it, it would end up rough. Also didn't like the streaks it left on the mahogany. So I sanded it back lightly w/ 200 and 400 grits and applied some Tru Oil. I'll finish it up with that.

Got 'er done. Plays well. trying to get used to it as I built it to Les Paul specs, and I'm a bass player at heart.

And we're off on the next builds. 3 of them. Busted ass and got 3 bodies started from rough cut mahogany, all cut, thickness sanded and joined, rough shaped on the bandsaw, and the backs resawn to rout cavities. I had bought this wood with neck thru basses and guitars in mind, but due to prompting from my daughter, we're going to try our hand at swirling. I have a 55 gal clean drum to dip with and have located Majic Marble paints. Good homeschool project for Daddy and Doodlebug.
