Post subject:  Fingerboard length question

Hi everybody, I build guitars (the ones I use) just for fun, and I was planning to get me an electric bass
The problem is that, in my country, I can't get specific guitar-woods, and importing them is not an option. I can build form any wood but I want rosewood for the fingerboard, which I can get but only in guitar-length size.

My question is what kind of disadvantages would there be if I glue 2 blanks of fingerboards to achieve the needed length for a bass?

I can think in some but I will thank the oppinion of more experienced builders (you guys).. some of them are stiffness problems, aesthetic problems and maybe tone differences along the frets due to density, grain, etc.

I read somewhere else that there was a topic about this here, but after some search attempts I coudn't find it , so sorry if this was already discussed before

Splice it under a fret and it should not be a problem if done properly. Grain match not withstanding of course.

woooowww that's mind-blowing

I saw also a chess/checkers pattern before, but I'm aiming to something more traditional... actually I want to build a thunderbird bass copy (my first one was crappy)

anyway thanks for the suggestion

That started out to be an all ebony board that was barely long enough, at least until I got the wax off and found a severe 4" check on one end. I was initially going to do one splice, but it never looked right to me.
