A friend of mine bought an unfinished neck with the frets already in the maple board. He wants nitro on the fretboard. Should we just spray it over the whole thing and take it off the frets with concave fret files? Or would it save work to brush it between the frets carefully so as to have the least amount of finish on the frets?
Anyone with experience? How do other people finish these things?

Good question. I'll have this same problem soon on the bass I'm building. I'll be watching to see what the general consensus is on this.

Yes, spray over them, then scrape the finish off. I use one of those Stew-Mac stainless fret guards that I notched with a file. Works great.

I've used wipe-on poly. Fast, easy, and durable.

I always level my frets before setup.

I just spray over the frets and clean it off when I dress them.
