Ok, so I botched a finish today. I sprayed a green dye in lacquer but I think I sprayed it too uneven. Basically, too dark in spots so it looks blotchy. Prior to that, I grain filled and sealed. I grain filled with pigment-infused joint compound. This worked wondefully, by the way. It's swamp ash and I only needed one good application. That's saying something for that technique.

Anyway, where I think I went wrong as well was using green pigment to grain fill. I'm thinking I should have used black instead, which probably would have given better contrast and overall pop.

Now for the question...

All of that pigment is down in the pores. If I were to sand, strip or whatever back to bare wood I would still be contending with that. However, I started thinking since it's water based, maybe I could do a wash coat over top of it with a strong black dye in hopes that the water may loosen up the grain filler and perhaps turn it at least a darker shade of green if not black.

Am I out of my tree or does this have a shot?

Give it a try and then tell us. This DW compound pore fill is a new process that some folks are trying and someone will need to put forth the the time and effort to do some testing to find out what can and can't be done with it and how it works long term for durability. Sounds like you just moved up to the front lines on it.
