I have a 60's SG with some serious cracks around the neck pocket and it's at the point where the cracks are getting bigger as time goes on. Unfortunately the neck will have to be removed to do a proper repair and I'm not sure how to proceed. Is it possible to do this without having to remove the fingerboard? |

Yes, it can be done. It's easier if it's unbound, by the way. I usually drilled some small holes to run steam from the neck pickup area, and gradually eased the neck from the slot. I've also pulled frets and run steam holes near the joint seams. Patience... and it will yield to your ministrations. |

Seems to me they changed the design of the neck tenon at some point in the 60's. Made it shorter, and those are the ones prone to having these type issues. |

I tried to submit an upload (jpeg) using the upload attachment but it didn't work. Any suggestions? |

I suspect your image is too big. Do you know how to resize it to maybe 1200 pixels in the largest dimension? I don't know what the cut off is but 1200 should work. Kevin Looker |

Hey, Steve, Regarding the photo, it took me a while to figure out that uploading and attaching are two different steps in this software. Maybe that's what's causing problems for you. Try uploading it and attaching it to a new response, then click "preview" and you'll know whether you've got it. Patrick |

Thanks Pat. I tried uploading twice via your suggestion and no results. This SG has an unusual feature. I'll email the jpeg if anyone is interested in taking a look. |

Thanks for helping with the upload Kevin. This seems unusual. There are what appear to be two hardwood dowels on either side of the neck pocket. I believe the two pencil lines on the binding indicate the sides of the mortice. Can anyone confirm this? |

I'd say someone already tried to repair that SG once. |

Chris Pile wrote: I'd say someone already tried to repair that SG once. +1 Guess they tried to reinforce the failing joint with dowels. That's going to be even less fun. I would say the pencil marks are about right for the edges of the tenon, you should be able to see the end of the tenon in the pickup cavity. |

That looks about the width of the tenon on these. Someone tried to lock in the tenon with the dowels similar to how some lock in a tenon neck on some acoustic guitars. But in the opposite direction. |
