I normally stick with guitars. But thought a cajon would be cool to jam with. What type of woods are typically used for the front? Looking for a nice bass sound. My thought was mahogany for nice dark sound but then I was thinking that might be best for the sides and back. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dave,

Cajons are typically built from plywood. Here is a link to a site with a how to http://www.thecajondrumshop.com/index.php?page=How-To-Build-A-Cajon.

I made one out of plywood. Just 1/4" cheap stuff on the front. 3/4" everywhere else. I just banged it together with glue and a finish nailer. I would imagine you could tune the bass a bit with the size of thethe soundhole and the overall dimension of the front skin. Quick, fun project that sounds pretty good.
