I just tried out a Kala U bass on the baritone uke size body.
I believe it's around 21" scale with those weird strings.
It seems like the pick up is fairly necessary. I just want to use it for small song circle groups. My first thought was to find a used one & purchase. Then I would have the parts & specs. New, they are available for around $400.
And I have 4 "OOO" body parts kicking around and I would love to turn one of those in to one. What do you think & what are the considerations? Could I conceivably make it a typical 25.3 ish scale?

absolutely...the only acoustic bass instruments i've ever heard that produce nearly enough sound to compete with other acoustic instruments are upright/double basses....and they are freakin huge
