I just dropped a schaller floyd into my first build, intonation is great, plays in tune, but when I use the tremolo effect, my d and g strings seem to go flat. for me to properly intonate it, I had to set a couple saddles back as far as the could go so the bolts are only holding the end of the saddles down. I"m wondering if this could be causing my issue, in which case I'd probably need to swap out for an original or special, since they have three holes to screw the saddles into. or could it possibly be that the knife edges, which have a couple visible nicks on them, need sharpening? Schaller says they are replaceableknife edges, but no where in my searching have I ever found somewhere to buy them... |

Are you sure it is not simply a bit of string stretch as the new strings settle in? If it was warped knife edges it would have an effect on all strings at the same time, not just two. Do they return to pitch if you bump the trem up or down? Assuming you are using the locking nut, take a close look at the saddles for those two strings, make sure they are smooth where the string rides with no burrs or edges. I doubt its the bolts at the saddles, but it is possible if the end of the saddle is not captured by at least 2/3's of the bolt. |

Are you sure it's not a problem with the lock nut, as those two strings are held by the same string lock at the nut? I just made a guitar with that exact tremelo, stays in tune perfectly even with extreme tremelo use. I picked it out because I like the hardened knife edge inserts and the hardened screw insets for the saddle intonation screws. When I recieved it I noticed it also has a nice weight to it and the plating seems solid as well. The tremelo block is made out of brass and not pot metal. |

I do love the schaller floyd's, and I put one of those brass big blocks on it too, sounds great. the nut is nice and snug, but my break angle isn't very great when the clamps are off, not sure if that would have anything to do with it. I doubt it, but I'd like to know what you guys think. Could be that the string isn't stretched enough, but she's been strung for a week now, and I put them through all the normal stretching. The strings are those new ernie ball cobalt's, the kind of feel different, I don't think I really like them. |

String break can definitely have an effect, but once things are locked it should be OK. I used the string hold down bar on the guitar I made. When I'm locking down the nut I do a few things, which are especially helpful when the strings aren't held snug in the nut. I set the fine tuners on the tremelo halfway. In playing position I make sure all the strings are fully stretched, but not overstretched, and in tune. Then I lock the first nut, and check the tuning. In the case where there's no break angle, the strings aren't in tune when you lock it, but they must be retuned before you lock the second one to avoid compound tuning error when you lock the second and third nuts. Lock the second one, check all the strings. Lock the third, tune them, then check all the strings. Then I give the bar a good dove and a pull back, then retune them and check again. Usually that does it and they're good to go. If not I start looking for friction points. Oh, I also lubricate the string contacts in the saddles with Big Bend's Nut Sauce, or something similar. |

It's seems to be staying in tune better the more I play it, maybe there's some sort of set in time for a just finished guitar? the action is fairly high too, when I get some time, I'll have to shave some more wood off under the nut and pull the mounting posts out, and shave that down a bit too. the studs are as low as they can be set right now, and its still higher than I'd like. maybe the extra movement to get it to the fret is enough to alter the tune, or pull up the trem and make it sound out of tune? just guessing |

All tremolo's go out of tune with use. It is just the nature of the beast. |

she's neck through, unfortunately. But i figured I'd still have to some adjusting after it was all said and done. Probably should have mocked it all up before putting the finish to her, but you know, first guitar, I was bloody excited. |
