Post subject:  laminated neck question....

I'm still working on my first build, and already thinking about my next. This one has a 5-layer through neck, 3 layers of maple and 2 of walnut. I'd like to get a little fancier on the next.

I've seen some high-end builds where there is a thin white layer between 2 woods. What is this material? Plastic? Where do I get it, and what kind of glue would I use on it?

Thanks for your input.

That's typically a thin slice of wood. Plastic isn't well known as a tonewood and I doubt that's what you're seeing. My guess is rock maple.

P S I'm getting ready to do a laminated neck too. Cocobolo and maple.

Yeah, I didn't think plastic would be a good idea. It's just that some of them are so light-colored.

Sweet. My next will be maple, padouk, and walnut. And maybe some pear veneer if it's light enough.

Maple would be my guess (veneer), although fish paper might theoretically be possible (Stuff binding is made of sometimes).

Get some veneer, maple or other light colored wood. There is also white fiber sheets available.

I use maple veneer, as others suggest. Cheap enough and easy to get. I also use it under head plates and such.

If it is really white then it could be holly veneer.

I've used holly quite a bit. It can be bright white and look like plastic, especially under finish. Maple usually has a liittle color, esspecially under finish.
