Post subject:  Odd shaped cavity covers

Working on my first build, I didn't think to trace a "normal" wiring cavity to base mine off of, I just kind of drew it on freehand and started routing. Now that I'm getting near completion, I'm wondering how I could trace off a cover to fit properly. would you just trace the shape on paper, then transfer it onto what your cutting it out of? that seems the easiest and most obvious, but just wondering what some of you guys would do or have done?

Normally the cover is set flush with the surface and sits on a ledge routed around the top of the cavity. My approach would be to lay out and cut out the cover so it was about 1/2" larger than the cavity all around, scribe the shape onto the guitar and then rout the ledge the same thickness as the cover material.

I did route a ledge for the cover, I just need to transfer that shape to my pickguard material. I think I figured it out now, it was pretty easy and obvious, now that I think about it. But thanks
