I'm looking for a nut for a lapsteel, which is wider than a standard guitar nut. I can't seem to locate one on the net. Does anyone know where i can get one, or does anyone have one they no longer need?

Stew mac and LMI have a wide assortment of blanks. Should be able to find something that will work.

If you don't mind working with a saw and a file you could make a good one out of a piece of aluminum pretty quickly.

Guitar fetish sells inexpensive long bone blanks.
I just bought one last week.

I make lap steels exclusively.
You can get by with a classical nut blank, sometimes.
Look for a resonator parts site.
Those nuts are REALLY tall.
I've made them out of brass,
also cut some out of a cow bone that my dogs cleaned up for me.
Corian works too!
Got any tools for processing one?
It's nice when the string action is at least a 1/4",
so you can use a Beard capo on it.
Any lower is a pain.
A tad highher than that would be better!

I bought one off eBay last week, but it is about the same width as a normal guitar nut, however it is quite tall. I did wonder about classical nuts however... but I'm now thinking about creating one out of some of that brass blank mentioned here. It's also the only thing I've found on other sites. I've also seen other lapsteels with basically some angle iron used. I'll have to loom around...

Thanks for all the replies. Keep 'em coming if you think of anything else.

Here we go, would this be ok?

I have never built a lap steel before, I'm just having a crack at it. Do you secure the nut with araldite?
