My friend John gave me this "slide guitar thing" that he got from another friend. He handed me a late '40's Magnatone Lapsteel. Freakin' cool!! It's in rough shape but it works, which is suprising as it looks like a flood victim.

I'll be doing a bit of refurb on it to make it playable. It's not worth a restoration as you can score a decent one on the inter web for a couple hundred bucks.
Questions
1: What size strings do these run? 22 1/2" scale. The remaining strings on it were B=19, G=23, A=40, E=57.
2: What is the slide for your left hand called? I can find one if I know what to ask for.
3: Anyone have a knob for this? It came with only one and they're kinda neat.

The slide is generally called a steel.

Thanks Brian,

I'll have to look a little further, I don't think I need a $60 steel for a free guit that I don't know how to play.

Get an SP2 bar.
Those are what I use.
22 bucks(?)
Bullet end, and cut-away end.
Nice score on the Mag!

Hey Alan,

I went with the SP4. It said basic and that might be generous for my abilities. Also ordered up some picks and strings for E tuning. Then over to Stew Mac for replacement tuner buttons and replacement top side string ferrules. The volume pot is toast, that's no big deal as I've got plenty in stock. The plastic overwrap is loose in a few places so I'm trying some different adhesives to get that secured. For $75 I'll get my freebie to a playable condition, not too bad I guess.

Strongly suggest you DO NOT try to reglue the plastic covering.
Don't wanna be the guy who "told you so" later....
