I’m doing a repair to an Epiphone Les Paul copy that has really big inlays in the fingerboard. I’d like to sand the fingerboard down before I install the new frets, but the imitation pearl inlays are really shiny and nice looking. I’m worried that sanding them will leave scratch marks even if I use a very fine grit. Any suggestions? |

Why sand the fingerboard? |

You can polish the inlays along with the fretboard using a buffing wheel and rouge. @Chris When refretting a guitar, it's sometimes advisable to level the fretboard with the existing radius to remove any irregularities/humps/warps. |
