I got my set off e-bay, really like them, they were 20$ for an entire set I believe.

I have two ancient sets of Ibanez nut files, plus a huge selection of die sinker files, etc.
Files are my favorite hand tool, so I have lots and lots of them.

I like the ones from SM that cut the same size on both edges for the slots. I use Nicholson's for all the shaping and dressing.

I use a set of Hiroshima files for guitar work. I love them, and wouldn't be without them. But for bass, I use the StewMac files. The same ones B. Howard recommended. They are a great quality file.

Mine as well. I learned to use a file in the USAF, working on fighter jets. They are a wonderful tool. Most people don't get near enough experience to actually use a file properly.

Virgil I got the ones with the red handles from there.
Each edge being a different size. ( I believe they offer another type too, as Brian mentioned)

The black lettering on the handles comes off.
I saw that somebody here had made a wooden rack to hold them
and had the sizes marked- I'll be doing the same even though I've
scribed the sizes on the metal.

I also got the nut vise from Stu. - it's very nice.

I have the red handled three piece set from Stew Mac. I've only used them a few times, but they seem to work well. The lettering did peel off mine as well. I tried using a sharpie, but it just blurred and became unreadable. I finally resorted to using a piece of tape and putting the sizes on that way.

Mine also got a little pitted after humidity spike last fall. Could have been prevented if I had put something on them as a rust preventative. I used a little camilia oil, but it was a little late.

My sister ended up buying me the Essential Nut Making Tool Kit: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Nuts,_saddles/Special_tools_for:_Nuts_and_saddles/Essential_Nut_Making_Tool_Kit.html

I am figuring this will get me going in the right direction and I can try other files down the road - I have turned in MacGyver with so many things over the last year or so, I would imagine I can make a nut with this kit.
