Here's an interesting problem. I build the neck angle into my guitar necks. I usually do this by making a separate piece, sanding an angle into it, and then gluing it onto the neck. That's pretty simple. So I made a small design change but it takes me from a 3 degree to a 4 degree neck angle. The question is, what's the best way to re-angle the neck to 4 degrees. Make a 1 degree shim and glue it on? Somehow try to shave the heel down to be 4 degrees? Everything I think of seems very error prone. Since the neck tilts backwards, the angle faces into the middle of the neck, so I can't use a hand plane...that's the real killer. Whatever I do, I can't just clean it up with a hand plane because the front of the plane will hit the neck before it gets to the end of the taper. I suppose I could just pop off the angled piece, clean it up and glue on a 4 degree heel. Anyhow, I'm just looking for some clever ideas to recut this angle before I throw in the towel and treat it as a repair. |

Get a really good chisel, and get it really sharp, and use that like a plane. Go slow and really concentrate. I really like the word really. |

I think I have a plan. I just needed to get away from it for a little bit. I think I'm going to stick my neck in my neck pocket jig (Myka style jig) and prop it up to a 4 degree angle. Then it's just a matter of setting up a stop so I don't run the bit into the neck. Actually, I'm liking this enough that I may start doing if like thus all the time. Then I can glue the block when it's square, which makes clamping much easier. Its also a bit if a pain to make the 4 degree wedge in the first place. If this works well it will make everything easier I think. |

FWIW, this worked perfectly. It worked so well, in fact, that from now on I will glue on flat heels and set the angle with my angle plate in the Myka style jig. Just FYI for anyone that was wondering. |
