I have a customer who brought in a Squire Strat for some neck adjustments and he is also having some volume issues. He recently installed a StewMac drop in pre wired pickguard assembly, and there is a significant drop in volume when the 5-way switch is in the 2 and 4 positions. I'd say about a 75% drop in volume. I build acoustics and am gradually starting to learn about electric wiring, but I'm not sure what could cause this. As it is a brand new pick-guard assembly he could easily return it for a new one, I'm just wondering if anyone knows what causes this and if it is an easy fix. I haven't had time to take the guard off and look at the wiring yet but should get to that in the next day or two.

Sounds like the middle pickup is out of phase. Reverse the two lead wires coming off of it to the the switch and back of the potentiometer.
