Nice haul dude. The kind of thing we all dream of. Must say I prefer Sapele to actual mahogany. More ribbon figure, and darker.

I never understood why (on the internet) people refer to "mahogany" as a final timber.....? Its a generic term which does not mean anything.... :)

The name "Mahogany" may refer to the largest group of all Meliaceae, the
fifteen related species of Swietenia, Khaya and Entandrophragma.

The name mahogany is used when referring to numerous varieties of dark-colored hardwood. It is a native American word originally used for the wood of the species Swietenia mahagoni, known as West Indian or Cuban mahogany.

The term was next applied to the wood of Swietenia macrophylla, which is closely related, and known as Honduras mahogany. Both are from the Meliaceae family.

When you read ‘Mahogany body and neck' - these are generalities that can cover and mask many
things: some inexpensive substitute, a poorer species OR an endangered specie!

I've been told by lumberyards that Honduras Mahogany is the genuine mahogany and all the others , like African Mahogany, are called Mahogany 'cuz they look like genuine Mahogany.

Rough plained the blanks today, ready for stacking...

3 of them are not good enough for neck building so I will be keeping them for something else :)

All the others are awesome!

Enjoy!

Now stacked for a couple months in a controled environement, waiting till they drop down to 8% :)

That's some really nice looking striped mahogany. I was able to score a similar deal of 10/4 sapele...enough for about 50 necks (I laminate them along with maple and perivian walnut). Most of it is pretty straight and has some nice grain contrast though I wouldn't call it "striped" exactly.

Nice find! Buying wood is one of the best things about building guitars. :)
