I am just checking in. After 20 years of law firms I started a new job, in house, in March and finally have enough free time to get back to guitar building. Currently on my bench is an archtop. Could be slapping on some paint in a couple of weeks of detail work on the neck. Here it is mocked up. Spruce top, curly maple back and sides, 5-piece curly maple neck with Indian rosewood center lam. It took a long time to get the neck set right - started out as a dovetail that ended up with bolts. Works perfectly now. Planning a satin burst and only a volume knob. Can't wait to play it. |

Beautiful stuff, Steve! Be sure to post finished pics once you get there. And maybe some sound clips if you can. |

Thanks all! Dave Stewart wrote: Looks great Steve! About 3 1/2" body?? That's about right, Dave. Frankly, it has been so long since I actually looked at the plans that I am not sure; it might be a full 4" deep. It certainly is a lot to hold on your lap. My ES175 feels small in comparison. |

I would have not tackled half the things in my life if I spent too much time being daunted by the details. Oblivions Unite! Filippo Always biting off a little more than you can chew? Hehe...so the secret to life is accepting discomfort? Maybe so... ...but my most significant progress happened when I was in a position of having to do something. Do or die. |

Filippo Morelli wrote: As I once told my wife, if you stacked on a table every single book to read, worksheet, paper to write and exam to take to complete a 4 year college degree, many would be overwhelmed and never dive in. Yes naivety is a powerful thing. My 20th anniversary is tomorrow. I think if you ask anyone that has worked to keep a marriage for 20 years - would they have married if they new what it would take - they'd likely turn the offer down. Ah the power of naivety. Filippo Indeed. And the wisdom of, "one day at a time." |

alan stassforth wrote: Looks great, Steve! How was bending that Venetian? Thanks, Alan. I probably won't do this kind of thing again. This was a tricky project with problems almost from the word "go." But I have no intention of being in the business of making archtops. This one is supposed to be my daily player, because my current archtop is over 50 years old. Fortunately, then, I don't need it to look perfect. Thanks, Jason... Me too! |
