Post subject:  1 meg vol pots?

Hi.
I'm working on a '62 Harmony Rocket,
archtop thinline job.
I pulled the harness out, and found the f.b. pickup is dead.
The bridge pickup is good, and it reads 11k ohms.
and the tone controls are 250 k ohms.
The vol pots are 1 meg.
Ever see that?
Seems to me a 250k or 500k would sound better.
Any advice?
Thanks.

Some people like to use 1Meg pots for what they call a "wide open" sound. I play humbucker guitars and always keep the tone knob around 6, so having more highs doesn't appeal to me. But that's the reason for it at least.

Is the guitar for you or are you repairing it for someone else? If for the former, I'd suggest 500k pots. If the latter, I'd still suggest 500k pots, but maybe ask the customer what kind of sound they're after.

Are they the original pots? A lot of guitars in the 60's had 1 meg pots. They have less treble bleed and give a brighter sound.

So, if it's wide open, it doesn't matter,
does it?

Worked on a 54 Gretsch with a 2 meg (measured 1.685) master volume CRL pot. Sounded great.
