Slow down a bit and back up. I take it you're trying to paint a guitar, with spray paint? Not good. especially if you're wanting pro results. Best way we can help is for you to tell us if it's a new build or changing the color of a guitar. Some pictures help, even if it's from your cell phone.

Spray paint is for signs for dogfights and old rusty lawnmowers. That junk is too runny and makes a mess of everything. I can screw up real quick with that junk.

http://reranch.com/ has a lot of good info on painting guitars. They can help even on a budget.

Aniline dyes are real easy to work with. From http://www.lmii.com/ (Luthier's Mercantile). Also Stewart Macdonald. Check out the sponsors at the top of this page.

Another source is auto paint suppliers. A lot of good info from them as well.

Do some reading on the subject, explain what you're trying to do and we'll help you get the results you want.

Spray paint works fine for me. As long as you spray it evenly and don't over do a coat it you shouldn't get runs. Sanding in between coats helps too. And having a coat of primer. I definitely think you can get a pro job out of some spray paint. Many guitars are.

Professional jobs are basically the same except you mix the paint yourself and run it through a spray gun instead of a can. I'm sure it sprays a little more evenly but I haven't had a problem that some light sanding wouldn't fix.

You can also get some nice mettalic colors at auto parts stores. I've been itching to try some of that two tone paint that changes color with point of view.

Don't mean to argue with you, I just think you can get some very proffessional results with good technique and some super fine sandpaper.
