Post subject: | Acoustic tonewood |
Hi. I have fairly good experience building electric guitars, and Im ready to tackle an acoustic this summer. I wanted to ask where I can get decent back, sides, and soundboard wood without paying an arm and a leg? Any suggestions? I'm not so worried about beauty or grain patterns, and the tone will be what it will be. This is an experiment. I just want to know what would be a workable, stable, and all around decent choice for these woods. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! thanks. |

There's a huge page of advertising up above us. These are forum sponsors, and they have great wood at great prices. The one I deal with the most is Luthiers Mercantile(LMI). You can get their lower grade tops, back and side woods really cheap, and from what I understand, can make an execellent guitar from it. I am not an acoustic builder, but it would seem to me, as far as wood choices go, that if you stick with the standard tried and true woods you'd be going in the right direction. Sitka spruce or Cedar for the top, and EI rosewood or mahogany for the back and sides. These woods have been used countless times in acoustic guitar building. There's a reason for that. They work well. Also, you have posted on the electric guitar part of the forum. You'll get a much better and more detailed response if you go back to the board index and choose the very first forum available, the Guitar Building Forum, and post there. That is the main discussion area for acoustic guitar building. Welcome to the forum. |
