I've got this really weird piece of wood. What should I do with it? |

You might want to think about making a guitar out of it. Of course if that mouth starts laughing, burn it. What is it? Mike |

That is amazing and a perfect example of why I love wood. |

Funny thing. I got this cap from Brock Poling. He had it upside down from this. Amazing piece of wood. Here it is the other way... The way he had it. See the tele lines on it? |

That's a wild looking piece of wood. The way Brock had it, it looks kind of like a spider to me. Definately build a guitar with it. |

That's almost too nice to use. Maybe just build a shrine to it in your shop and contemplate the possibilities |

Whatever you make from it, you need to name it Galaga! That looks almost like one of those bugs from that game. On the other hand, you could send it to me in trade for two very plain pieces and then you would not have to worry about what to do with it! Mike |

I think I'l join it, frame it, and hang it on the wall till I can firgure it out. Main problem with it is, after all the pickups, hardware etc. is put on it, it'll lose a lot. Back burner for now. |

I always have the same thought when dealing with a piece of wood that has particularly nice or interesting figure. But it's unavoidable and part of the process. If you plan it carefully, you can arrange the pickups and other routes in spots with less figure. As for what to make out of it, I think this begs a unique design, not just a one-off. And I think you're exactly the man for the job. You won't disappoint. |

Absolutely stunning. Just admire it again and again till it tells you what to do with it and thank your lucky stars it has come to you. Steve |

I think that would make a pretty sweet super strat myself. |

Use it for a string thru strat with a Single Humbucker. Very simple and won't take away much from the top. No pick gaurd of course. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll take Stuarts advise first, though. I am getting some ideas.... Gotta lay it out and see what you all think. |

String through Strat with nothing but a piezo bridge, knobs on the side of the guitar. Minimum interference with your Pontiac Trans Am emblem, bandit. |

Post subject: | Re: What should I do with this?? |
I would go with an acoustic-style wooden bridge with a piezo transducer. No magnetic pickups, and control knobs mounted on the bridge a la Rob Allen (http://www.roballenguitars.com/). Being a bass player and a lover of fretless basses, I would build it into a bass and pair it with the most figured ziricote or Madagascar rosewood fingerboard I could find. |

If this is some kind of Rorschach test, I see a really cool kazoo.... if not, what about making a really big headstock? |
