Post subject:  Plans for a Gibson ES-355

I build mandolins at the moment but would really like to try my hand at building an archtop thin-bodied semi-hollow electric guitar such as a Gibson ES-355. Does anybody know where I could lay my hands on a set of plans or kit components maybe?

I see kits on eBay but I can't recommend them at all.

Thanks, I thought that may be the case. What about plans - have you ever come across them?

Amazon.com, $14.50. http://www.amazon.com/Gibson-ES335-Jazz-Guitar-PLANS/dp/B0012K3GQW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301517225&sr=8-1.

I ordered a set and they look good. Measurements are accurate.

I have this plan too. I think it's the only one that exists on the market.
But honnestly, it's not really good. The shape is really undefined, and there're some big errors in the plan. That is not a ES-335.

Looking at the image on the website, I would have to agree so I am not holding out too much hope. I even checked with Roger Siminoff who worked at Gibson for 20 odd years and he couldn't help.

I will keep trying though.

greg,
Email me at kenmckayathotmail.com. I have a plan and I also sell parts for a kit.
I just happen to be shipping one to Queensland on Monday.

I feel kind of sleazy promoting myself here... but as far as I know this is the only correct ES body kit available. I have been a member here for years so I am not trolling. [:Y:]

I'd just like to see the bracing inside. And/or top and back thickness' / contours.

I did get an email from Greg.

As far as contours and thicknesses, there is not a single measurement that would cover all years. I am really just interested in reproducing the so called golden period ES body. My plates are laminated - 4 ply and finish at about 0.19 inches thick as do the sides. Modern Gibson ES are thicker and use different veneers for the core layers and are 3 ply. All veneer is radial sliced to special thickness.

The arching is fairly similar in all years but the outline is different after 1963 with the ears changing shape from a mouse ear to a more pointy  fox-like shape.

Ken,
Many thanks for your help so far. I would love to hear from your customer in Queensland Australia. Give him a nudge if you are in contact with him.

If you're interested in a modern version see - https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0BwDsdFj7D8kWMzUyYjkwN2QtNGRhNC00ZjJmLTkyM2UtNTY3YzZmZWZkZjdl&hl=en_US
The contours shown are from measured values. A mold for forming the top/back also needs to account for springback.
