Post subject:  Blackened bone nut

Hi!

Do you guys know a way to blacken bone?

I know I could find black buffalo horn but, what I've been told is that horn is much more porous than bone, and then it's not as suitable as bone for nuts and saddles.

Thanks guys!
Francis

Horn is softer and not as dense as bone. I'm not sure how much that would effect tone on an electric guitar. I'm not sure how to make bone black, but I can tell you I have tried to dye it and that does not work. I'm in the same siutation. I want a black nut. There are other materials such as Mycarta I beleive but I'm not sure how they would do as a nut.

How about Black Tusq XL, made by Graph Tech. Never used it myself, and it's pricey, but it's also black and sounds like a good choice: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Nuts,_saddl ... L_Nut.html

Ebony makes a great nut IMO.

I've only experimented with bone nuts on an acoustic guitar, and it made it way too bright for me.

I've played with black tusq and regular (i.e., white). My opinion is that the black is less bright than the white.

My 2 cents...
