Has any one made guitars from MDF which were blocked colored, i know about the weight problem associated with this type of material, but with a cnc machine one could recess out the inner and put a cap on the top. Just a thought, as someone asked me the other day if i could build him a body that he was going to paint himself. Jeremy.... |

personally... i would never even think about making a guitar out of mdf, i guess you could theoretically.. but there would be all kinds of problems, its not a ver sturdy material, screws would strip out real easy and i dont think i would trust it to hold the tension that the neck would put on the body. |

I once made a set of three. an acoustic, a les paul & A SG. they were cut from 1/2" shelf and had the strings drawn on with a sharpie. my kids (aged about 2, 4 & 6 at the time) loved them. as to making a REAL guitar? acoustic moulds yes. guitar? no ta! |

I think you could do it - with some very creative bracing and struts and supports inside. But if you want to go cheap - just use pine from the home store. MDF would be a mess to work with. |

You are talking about an electric, right? If so, sure why not? If you have a CNC and go to all of the trouble to draw it up then it shouldn't be much trouble to cut a solid wood body if it doesn't work. You are planning on using solid wood though for the neck, right? I wouldn't try MDF for that. It is no where near stiff enough. |

I thought about making a solid body guitar out of particle board long ago, to hear what it would sound like, as an experiment. before mdf existed, but decided against it, because it is so much work. I bet it would sound fine. Alder is cheap and paints well. |

Thanks for the info, i new that there were problems with this type of material. I will just have to him to stick to proper woods that we can get here in South Africa.... Have you guys heard of Mervyn Davis from www.smoothtalkerguitars.com, i do all his cnc`ing for him, what do you think. Jeremy |

I think I saw those at the last LMI git-fest. I liked them, but my friend I was with didn't. |
