Post subject:  neck pocket confusion...

Hey all....I bought a Warmoth bolt on neck to use for my first guitar. I'm using a mahogany baulk and glued on a 3/4" maple top. I'm confused about how deep to make the neck pocket in the baulk. I know that the normal neck pocket depth is 5/8" but I'm concerned that the flat area of the carved top will be too high since it is 3/4" high. The total height of the neck is 1". Can anyone help? Thanks!

hey andy, hi. if i were you, i would get a big piece of heavy paper, and lay out your side profile of your body, bridge, neck, and see how deep to make your pocket.
make sure you get a bigger router bit than the one you cut your body out with.
1/2" diameter minimum.
alan.

Thanks man. I think that if I want to keep my center area on my carved top the full 3/4" height, I will have to leave a 1/8" of the maple top between the neck heel and the baulk.

How tall is your bridge? You need to determine if you need an angled neck or not. That'll have an effect on how your neck pocket should be routed.

Hey the bridge is 1.624". I'm just making the neck pocket parallel to the top and going to rout out the back of the guitar for tremolo to the proper depth.
